VILLA DEL MONTE, Monterey — October 29, 2026. A neighborhood playground project at Ferrante Park is among the small but tangible improvements residents can trace through Monterey’s public budget records. The city’s January 21, 2026 Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program review listed an available balance of $20,000 for project NCP2406, intended to add seating at the park’s playground area along Del Robles Avenue.
Exactly what the park project proposed
The project’s detailed card describes at least one square picnic table and two benches in the decomposed-granite area of the playground, near the southeast corner of Ferrante Park. This is specific play-area seating, not an approved rebuild of every park feature or a new recreational building. Seats near children’s play areas can help caregivers remain near the equipment, but the public record does not document a final accessible design or completion inspection.
Why it appeared in a city deficit review
The January committee was asked to consider older approved projects that had not started or had become inactive, as officials worked to address a $10 million structural city budget deficit. This Ferrante Park item received 114 earlier project votes and was ranked fifth in its earlier NCIP selection. Its $20,000 was an available balance in the historical packet, not proof that furniture was ordered or installed.
Does the listing mean the benches were canceled?
No. A candidate list for possible fund reallocation is not itself a final City Council vote. California58 cannot confirm from that January document whether later 2026 decisions retained, revised or spent the amount. Residents can request the current status by citing NCP2406 and Ferrante Park.
The park proposal is separate from the Casa Verde Avenue underpass project and Villa Del Monte traffic-calming efforts, which have their own locations and engineering questions.
